Q: What's your name and position in the company?
A: Kelly Drewett, owner and founder
Q: Describe your company in 5 words.
A: Website design with SEO
Q: What's your business philosophy?
A: I want to help businesses realise that websites are more than design, that search engine optimisation in necessary, and that they should be doing more to help their business survive online. I design, teach and optimise the web.
Q: Describe your office environment.
A: I work along side my partner, Ben who is a web developer. We don't work together, but we help each other out. Our office is in our converted basement. It is a large open space, which we have filled easily. We each have a huge desk each. There is a kitchenette, and room for numerous bikes, snowboards and skis.
Q: Describe how your team interact and work together.
A: I work with other freelance designers, developers and content writers, all remotely. I have studied the work of each person I choose to work with. I do not worry where in the world they are, as long as what they produce is quality.
Q: What makes you different from other web design companies?
A: That I am passionate about small businesses and the internet. That I want to help websites do well on the internet, rather than designing them and leaving them be. I talk easily to clients who have little understanding, teaching them to help themselves.
Q: How do you get the majority of your business?
A: The majority is through word of mouth, although a lot of people contact me via my online profiles. I work for different companies around the world.
Q: Describe how you manage projects from the initial client contact to completion and handover.
A: Sometimes you find a small business owner knows what they would like, often you find they have no idea. The brief is really important, so I like to find out exactly what is in a persons head before we start the design stage. When a person starts to think about what they really want, colours, fonts and images the requirement can often change. It is a natural process.
I then offer a proof site, and the client can change anything they like at this stage. We tweak the design and layout of one page until it is exactly right. I then go on to complete the rest of the pages, so they follow suit.
Once everything is checked on all devices and platforms I launch the site on behalf of the client, on which every hosting they have chosen.
Q: What do you think is the most crucial element of creating a good client relationship?
A: Communication!
Q: How do you manage demanding clients?
A: Most business owners are demanding when it comes to the website, as it is a big investment and it should be done right. I charge what I charge so that clients can be demanding.
Q: If a client was trying to decide between a shortlist of web design companies, how would you recommend they go about selecting the right one for them?
A: Make sure the designer has plenty of experience. A lot can go wrong in website design, especially as they must be responsive and work on the search engines. So many people say they can get a website online for you, but there is a big different between a good website and a bad one. Unfortunately a lot of time and money is wasted on bad websites.
Q: Where do you see your company in 10 years time?
A: I would like to grow a bit, but not too much by outsourcing more great designers, developers, online marketers and social experts. I would like to build a fantastic team of people who know the ins and outs of the web.
Q: Where do you see the web design industry in the future?
A: A lot of people are putting together their own websites today. I see this going 50/50. More people will build their own, but many will realise the importance of building a website for search engines and turn back to web developers that build from scratch.
Q: What computers do you have use in your offices, PCs or Macs?
A: PC
Q: How was your company name chosen?
A: I was 19 when I started my company. Kaydee is the first letters of my first name and surname, Kelly Drewett. A made up word. My logo has a bud growing inside the D, which represents business growth and networking.
Q: If you were to give your clients one tip on how to get the most from their website what would it be?
A: Build it with search engines in mind. There is not a lot of point in a website that doesn't do what it needs to online. It can cost more and be more time consuming undoing bad SEO. Continuously update your site and strive to be the best you can online.
