Interview
WWDC:
Describe your company in 5 words.
Xynergy Web Development:
”Creative, Fun, Professional, Versatile, Knowledgeable ”
WWDC:
Where do you see your company in 10 years time?
Xynergy Web Development:
”Probably as some subcompany of Google, since they seem to be taking over the world. This is assuming that the world doesn't end in 2012.
On a more serious note, it's hard to say - technology is constantly changing, and in 10 years our main source of business could be something completely different, like iPhone apps or Holograms or who knows what. We're very versatile though, and I'm sure we'll still be around doing whatever service it will be that is equivalent to what we do now.”
WWDC:
How was your company name chosen?
Xynergy Web Development:
”Jen chose the name in 1994, long before I was working here...you'll have to ask!”

What's your name and position in the company?
Xynergy Web Development:
”Julia Felix, Online Marketing Specialist”
WWDC:
Describe your company in 5 words.
Xynergy Web Development:
”Creative, Fun, Professional, Versatile, Knowledgeable ”
WWDC:
What's your business philosophy?
Xynergy Web Development:
”To build a website that not only our clients can be proud of, but that we can be proud of. To treat each client with respect and fairness. To help clients get the best website possible for their budget.”
WWDC:
Describe your office environment.
Xynergy Web Development:
”Clean and a little bit quirky. Lots of modern style furniture (Jen's taste), oddly framed newspaper articles and awards all over the walls - for some reason there is a giant, blue painted canvas on the wall in Bonny's office. Dual monitors all over the place, and some very nice plants outside (thanks to me). We share the building with a Dance Company, a Theater Company, a Bakery, and a Media Production guy. ”
WWDC:
Describe how your team interact and work together.
Xynergy Web Development:
”Everyone has lots of work to do, and sometimes we get pretty stressed out. However, we know we can't put a website up without the help of everyone, so we try to be as courteous as possible to each other. When I've been particularly nagging someone, like Brian, our Senior Database guy, or Jerome, our HTML programmer, I usually make up for it by bringing them a nice chocolate bar when I'm visiting in Albuquerque. When we're not insanely busy, however, we have a good time joking around on gmail chat.”
WWDC:
What makes you different from other web design companies?
Xynergy Web Development:
”We do a really good job. We also don't screw our clients over. I've heard countless stories of people who went with another company because they were very inexpensive, and not only did they end up paying twice or three times the amount just because the web designer wasn't very good and kept charging them for making corrections, but then the web designer had registered the URL under their own name so that the client couldn't leave. We make sure that our clients have everything they need so that, if they do choose to leave us, they'll be okay.”
WWDC:
How do you get the majority of your business?
Xynergy Web Development:
”Through adsense ads, internet search, and the phone book, mostly. On occasion, we get walk-ins from people who saw our sign while visiting the other web design company across the street.”
WWDC:
Describe how you manage projects from the initial client contact to completion and handover.
Xynergy Web Development:
”In 20 words!? Request->Proposal->Contract->SEO/Design Meeting->Design Comps->HTML Template->Programming->Dev Site->Client Training->Live Site!”
WWDC:
What do you think is the most crucial element of creating a good client relationship?
Xynergy Web Development:
”Being sympathetic and trying to understand where they're coming from, as well as being honest and straightforward. We get a lot of people who are frustrated from previous experiences and think that we must be trying to steal their money at every opportunity, since that's what the last guy did. Especially when it comes to Online Marketing, people appreciate that we aren't trying to sell them every service we provide - some things just aren't necessary or appropriate for every client, and we know the business well enough to tell you what you do and don't need, especially since most people don't have tens of thousands of dollars to spend on websites.”
WWDC:
How do you manage demanding clients?
Xynergy Web Development:
”On occasion, we do end up with fairly demanding clients. We've had enough experience that we can generally tell from an initial meeting whether a client is going to be super picky, in which case, we generally offer them a monthly retainer, where they have a certain number of hours per month for which we give them priority. Otherwise, we usually give a client a few hours for things like that, then offer them a retainer if it seems like it will continue. We are always courteous and respectful, though. The whole process can be stressful for the client, too!”
WWDC:
If a client was trying to decide between a shortlist of web design companies, how would you recommend they go about selecting the right one for them?
Xynergy Web Development:
”Look through the portfolios of those companies and see what their websites look like, what they do, if they work properly, etc. If you want to know what it's like to work with the web design companies on your list, see if you can get in touch with their clients, or find reviews online. If nothing else, try giving the company a call - just keep in mind that sometimes programmers are a little socially awkward :)”
WWDC:
Where do you see the web design industry in the future?
Xynergy Web Development:
”It's very difficult to say where the whole industry is going (in all of those movies about the future, no one ever predicted there would be cell phones - I'm sure I'm similarly completely missing something that will happen within 10 years), but I know we'll hold up. SEO and other Online Marketing will likely be very important no matter what, and luckily, we do that too! Design for things like Facebook page layouts will also be important, as well as design for smart phones. For actual websites though, it's up in the air.”
WWDC:
What computers do you have use in your offices, PCs or Macs?
Xynergy Web Development:
”Both PC and Mac”
WWDC:
How was your company name chosen?
Xynergy Web Development:
”Jen chose the name in 1994, long before I was working here...you'll have to ask!”
WWDC:
If you were to give your clients one tip on how to get the most from their website what would it be?
Xynergy Web Development:
”Update it regularly, both visually and in terms of copywriting. One of my pet peeves is going to a website that says "Coming in July!" and it's December, and people don't trust old looking websites, so you want to make sure you're getting a redesign at least every 5 or 6 years.”
