While doing SEO, there are a lot of mistakes that people make. Now, it’s the right time to correct the mistakes for better optimization of your website. These are some important areas that often get missed. So, let your website developer gets these basics before setting up a well optimized website for you.
Analytics:
For any web marketing purpose, one of the essential or unavoidable package is Analytics (Google or otherwise). This is used for measuring results and gaining insight, both. So, this shows how your website is being seen and used. If you are a marketer, you might know that it is priceless to have historical data from a website at the beginning of a campaign. Yet, we can see many sites are launched without analytics.
Semantic URLs
Semantic URLs represents the addresses of webpages that is human readable. Semantic URLs convey information in a more direct way. For example, www.webindiasolutions.com/services.html is more easy communicate than webpages like www.example.com/index.php?page_id=40.
The second option is easier to implement, but is an SEO killer. However, this on-page factor is not important as link building. But, placing keywords in your URL is an essential part of on-page optimization. So, make sure that your developer implements semantic URLs on your website. You won’t be penalized by any of the search engines, but you will be missing out a big chance of SEO. Also, changing the URL to semantic after the website has launched will be a headache.
XML Sitemaps
Sitemaps are very easy to implement and cost nothing. They are but a wonderful and cheap tool for SEO. So, they are always worth using. For static websites, these can be generated manually using any of the free tools available in the market. But, if it is a dynamic website or it requires frequent updations, creating sitemaps will not be that easy.
The site’s CMS should be able to update the sitemap automatically whenever the website is updated or changed. Either you can use any of the packages available for this, or you can aid plugins. If you are having a custom CMS written, ask your developer to include this facility.
Controlling Indexation
Google will never index your entire website if it is very large. They have a particular percentage of pages to be indexed. You will not be able to mention which all pages are to be indexed. But, you can surely let the Google know which pages are not to be indexed.
For a static website, this is easy to set up. But for a dynamic website, this is again a problem and you will have to control this through CMS. Sometimes, you will have to create a strategy for automatically not indexing pages.
301 Redirects
This is a rejected portion by many developers. If you are redesigning your website, make sure that pages from the old version are redirected to the new one. Also, your new CMS should automatically create 301s if you have removed or changed the URL of any page.
Canonicalization
Google doesn’t want to see duplicate content out of your website. You also don’t want Google to see them and remind you through the Webmaster Tools. From an SEO perspective, you can either choose a www or non-www canonicalization. But, once you chose, you will have to stick on to it.
Also, you have to make sure that your package is not generating multiple URLs. Implementing the canonical tab itself is the last step. This tag tells Google what the definitive URL of a page should be. It will also prevent problems generated by incoming links with extra URL in them.
