Monthly Computer Maintenance Steps

4 January 2008
I’m sure many of you wonder what you can do to maintain your computer and receive the best performance and functionality.

This is a common question.....With the computer industry changing so rapidly where does that leave most end-users? Totally lost...

Here are some basic maintenance tasks that anyone can do to keep their systems performance at its peak;

Get Windows updates regularly: Self performing test at http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Defrag your system monthly. Start-All programs-Accessories-System Tools-Defragmenter (it may tell you it doesnt need it “do it anyway)

Right mouse click on Internet Explorer choose properties icon then delete cookies & temp folders files and also clear history. (Short cut icons will not allow this function)

Keep a current Anti-virus program on your system-check that it is getting updates regularly. (Live Update for manual up dates)

Have a spyware application in place and check for spies on a weekly basis. (We recommend Lavasoft- Adware free download http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Make sure your system has at least 256 MB memory- you can check this by right clicking on My Computer, then choose Properties.

Check the available space allotment on your system by clicking on My Computer look for your C: drive. Then right mouse click on the C: drive and choose properties. You will then see a pie chart of the available space on your hard drive.

*Note once your drive is half full youll notice your system slowing down. Its time to clean unused files out and delete unused applications. Be sure to run Defragmenter after you do your spring cleaning! (Make sure you have a back up of critical files)

Happy Computing :)
