How to turn a Hit into a Visit

6 February 2012
Whatever your website is promoting, selling or informing, you need to give people some interesting facts to keep the viewer engaged and curious enough to read further into your website and convert your 'Hits' in to 'Visitors' or even 'Returning Visitors' when viewing your website statistics.

DON'T WAFFLE

Put yourself in the shoes of the viewer, what do you think THEY would want to know about your business/product? History, background and facts about your business/product may well be very interesting for you, but might be long-winded for someone new to your website. Keep facts short, try and get your point across in a few words - two factors to consider:

1) People/ visitors can be impatient when browsing the internet because they want to spend as little time as possible when searching for the product/ service they need - that's why your content needs to spell out keywords and capture the visitors who use selective reading to find what they want before you lose them to a competitor.

2) Trying to read and focus on large volumes of text using computer and laptop screens can also prove to be difficult for many people because of the glare and refresh rate of the monitor the person is using. If you must write lots of text, don't put in in a webpage that scrolls forever, convert it and allow people to download it and print it.

SEARCH ENGINE BOTS AND SPIDERS

For a website to be found and displayed in search engine results, search engines send out bots/spiders to crawl the internet for new content and websites on a daily basis. If your website is online, it will be visited. To make the most of the visit, you want the spiders to be able to read and understand where your website fits in to the index - and your content will play a key role in how your website is indexed. Keywords used and repeated throughout your website that best describe your business/product will improve the chances of your website appearing in search results.

VISIT OTHER WEBSITES

If you search for other business/product websites that are similar to you, this will give you a good idea of which keywords to use depending on what appears in the search results, and by reading through the websites that appear you can see how they have written their content.
