Favicon: What It Is & Why You Want One

Jeanette Pham, Corporate Identity Solutions, LLC, 15 April 2008

Learn what a favicon is and why your should have one for your website!

What is a favicon?
It's the little 16×16 icon that shows up next to a website's title on the tab bar or bookmarks.

Why do you want a favicon?
A favicon is an excellent way to help create brand awareness of your business & site, bring visitors to your website, and to keep bringing them back!

BRAND AWARENESS The favicon creates a visual representation of your business. Your logo is too big to fit everywhere and the favicon effectively represents your brand in those small places.

ADDRESS & TAB BAR Your favicon is listed in the browser tabs and address bar for every visitor to see, driving home your unique brand.

BOOKMARKS Browsers and bookmarking sites feature your favicon in their bookmark lists, helping past visitors to quickly spot your listing and come back for more.

SEARCH ENGINES Firefox already offers the Google Icon extension that places favicons in Google search results, attracting more visitors to the listing. We expect to see more search engines adding favicons to their results.

BLOG COMMENTS Do you offer comments on a professional blog? Some now fetch favicons and place them next to the comments. Favicons draw the eye and could be drawing blog users to your website link.
