Westhill Communications
A little agency with a lot of flavour
Design. Copywriting. Coding. Creative thinking. There's no need to sugar coat it, our portfolio speaks for itself.
Attitude, allusions to grandeur and being achingly hip may not be our thing, but we're really good at helping people find the best way to deliver their message - which, if you think about it, is pretty cool.

The Global Survivors Network aims to bring together people who have been affected by terrorism, and give them a voice. We’ve worked with co-founder Carie Lemack, whose mother was killed during the 9/11 attacks, to create and develop the organisation’s website. The site acts as a focal point for victims, helping to raise awareness and increase membership by highlighting events and providing a forum to share experiences. To mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11, we completely overhauled the look and feel of the site within W3C compliancy, adding new features, such as videos and links to social networks.

The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) works with the government, manufacturers, raw material suppliers and service providers to ensure consumers get the best products possible. It promotes good working practices, lets consumers know what’s in the products they use and helps separate fact from fiction. We’ve worked with the organisation since 2003 and we know its aims inside out. Our most recent project was to completely refresh the brand, while developing a content management system (CMS) for CTPA’s The Facts About website, which provides information on products that have come under the spotlight in the media.

Client: CWGC Project: CD-ROM and Website An engaging interactive resource can hold a child’s attention better than a bag of gobstoppers. But unless the materials are in line with the curriculum and are easy for teachers to manage, they simply won’t be used. For the Commonwealth War Graves Commission we created a thought-provoking CD-ROM and an information-rich website. We’ve also produced education materials for NatWest, ASDA and Cadbury.

WWDC:
What's your name and position in the company?
Westhill Communications:
”Terry Hermon, Director”
WWDC:
Describe your company in 5 words.
Westhill Communications:
”A little mountain opposite East”
WWDC:
What's your business philosophy?
Westhill Communications:
”Work hard, make it look effortless, have fun, be creative, get results. ”
WWDC:
Describe your office environment.
Westhill Communications:
”Three floors of competition over who can make the best tea. Other than that, communicative, creative, professional. ”
WWDC:
Describe how your team interact and work together.
Westhill Communications:
”The majority of us have been working together for years, so although it sounds cheesy, we really are like family – with all the respectful banter and bickering that goes with it. Because we don’t have account handlers, we all take much more ownership for the work we’re producing, and daily catch-up meetings ensure we all know at what stage each project is, and that we’re always sharing ideas as we go. ”
WWDC:
How do you get the majority of your business?
Westhill Communications:
”Through client recommendations.”
WWDC:
If a client was trying to decide between a shortlist of web design companies, how would you recommend they go about selecting the right one for them?
Westhill Communications:
”If you want something these days, you usually start by searching for it on the web, so it’s really important that every aspect of your web presence – the way it looks, the words you use, and the way that it functions – is truly reflective of your company. Choosing the right one, for me, comes down to all the usual things, like going through their portfolio and considering price, but the main thing is going with who you feel comfortable with. You’re building something that’s going to tell the world who you are. You need to make sure the company that’s helping you do that understand you and will be able to work with you daily to make it happen. ”
WWDC:
Where do you see the web design industry in the future?
Westhill Communications:
”There are so many ways to access websites now – through computers, smartphones, tablets etc – that it’s hard to predict what hardware we’ll be designing for, let alone how people will be interacting with it. However, as the boom in social media has shown, people will always want to engage with and share what interests them as much as possible. The key change for the web in the past decade has been that it’s not just for the techies, it’s for all, and that will only get bigger. ”
WWDC:
What computers do you have use in your offices, PCs or Macs?
Westhill Communications:
”Both PC and Mac”
WWDC:
How was your company name chosen?
Westhill Communications:
”The company was formed by two ex-journalists – John Westwell and Steve Hill – who combined their talents, and their surnames, and called the company Westhill. ”
WWDC:
If you were to give your clients one tip on how to get the most from their website what would it be?
Westhill Communications:
”Engage with your end users. Get feedback. Try to stand back from it and look on as if an outsider. Understand your competition. Research your industry. ”
