I have been working with Joomla! since 2006 as my preferred CMS choice to design and develop high quality affordable websites to small and medium size enterprises, specialising in the holiday property industry. I am proficient with a wide variety of Joomla! extensions used on these sites for social networking, user registration, forums, instant messaging, multilingual content, form, online payments, mailing lists, event and calendar management, galleries, guestbooks, layout design features, SEO, SEO friendly URLs, Site Backup, Google Maps, Sitemaps, Google Analytics, Google Custom Search, Twitter integration and advanced user front-end content management. With a long background in programming, I have also done some customisation by modifying PHP and other low level elements of the CMS. I am also very confident with CSS, Photoshop and Fireworks for creating website templates and enhancing the look and layout of integrated modules, components and plugins.

Eric Kaps

Eric Kaps

Freelance Website Designer / Developer
I am a degree qualified programmer with 20 years IT experience and have been producing websites for businesses for many years in various roles including developer, project manager, analyst, business consultant, contractor and successful business owner.

I pride myself in my attention to detail and ability to understand and satisfy my customers' needs.

Please see my websites for Client Reviews/Testimonials.

WWDC: What's your name and position in the company?
Starfish Websites: Eric Kaps - position: where the buck stops.

WWDC: Describe your company in 5 words.
Starfish Websites: Reliable, professional and excellant value

WWDC: What's your business philosophy?
Starfish Websites: To provide a professional, honest, friendly and high-quality service that greatly exceeds the client's expectation.

WWDC: Describe your office environment.
Starfish Websites: Organised, quiet, professional home office.

WWDC: What makes you different from other web design companies?
Starfish Websites: My vast experience in designing and developing websites for small businesses through to large corporates gives me the ability to produce websites that work for you in improving your business bottom line. Too many web designers build websites that lock their clients into future work or to satisfy their own design egos. You will struggle to find better value, attention to detail, quality and service with any other web design / development outfit.

WWDC: How do you get the majority of your business?
Starfish Websites: Word of mouth from happy customer and partner companies.

WWDC: Describe how you manage projects from the initial client contact to completion and handover.
Starfish Websites: Initial discussions/meeting to determine scope of requirements and establish confidence in the client's decision to choose Starfish Websites to build their site; Obtain go-ahead from client; Determine specific design and functional requirements for website; Prepare fixed cost estimate with specification of requirements to be delivered; Obtain agreement from client to design and build the website; Design, build & cross-browser test the website, with agreed feedback/re-design iterations with client; Client review of site and final fixes/changes; Client sign-off, invoice sent; Invoice paid, site goes live; Client feedback; On-going support & hosting of the website for the client;

WWDC: What do you think is the most crucial element of creating a good client relationship?
Starfish Websites: The most crucial element is to instil trust in the client that you: are good at what you do and can quickly and accurately understand what they require and deliver the project to the agreed cost, quality and time scale.

WWDC: How do you manage demanding clients?
Starfish Websites: By using a great deal of patience and understanding that their time is valuable and their expectations are higher than their budget. I have vast experience in dealing directly with demanding clients and effectively managing their expectations with very positive results.

WWDC: If a client was trying to decide between a shortlist of web design companies, how would you recommend they go about selecting the right one for them?
Starfish Websites: Reviewing feedback from other clients is very important in establishing confidence in a web design company's ability to successfully delivery a project. This should extend beyond reading the short reviews on websites to actually contacting a client who gave feedback. If the review is worth its salt then the web design company should be confident that their previous clients are happy to accept calls from new prospective clients. Experience and qualifications are also very important considerations.

WWDC: Where do you see your company in 10 years time?
Starfish Websites: In a similar position with 15 to 20 active clients and maintaining a very good reputation for producing high quality websites that work well for business whilst keeping up with current web trends.

WWDC: Where do you see the web design industry in the future?
Starfish Websites: Hopefully more client focused. There are too many websites being built today by unqualified, inexperienced so-called 'web designers' that represent very poor value for money.

WWDC: What computers do you have use in your offices, PCs or Macs?
Starfish Websites: PC

WWDC: How was your company name chosen?
Starfish Websites: Influenced by living on the coast and liking the business-related metaphorical connotations of the starfish shape.

WWDC: If you were to give your clients one tip on how to get the most from their website what would it be?
Starfish Websites: For business, it is a 'must have' tool to sell your products and services. The website's function is to convert an interested visitor by answering their immediate questions and getting them to contact you to enquire or buy or; to make an online purchase immediately for e-commerce sites. This must be the primary consideration throughout the design and build of the website. As with many things in this world, the cheapest, quickest option is often not the best. Think about spending a bit more on a CMS website that you can update easily yourself, rather than paying a web designer twice a year to update your website content. Websites that never change their content, do not feature well in search engines.
