WWDC:
Describe your company in 5 words.
Evolution Design:
”Proud, not precious of work”
WWDC:
Where do you see your company in 10 years time?
Evolution Design:
”We believe in evolution and will practice what we preach. That’s why we chose the name Evolution. ”
WWDC:
How was your company name chosen?
Evolution Design:
”The name Evolution was chosen 17 years ago and is actually more as relevant today as the speed of business evolution has increased. If you are not moving forward and evolving your look and communications then you are not standing still you are actually moving backwards as increased competition means that others will want to speak to your customers if you don’t.
It is such a good name that others have tried to copy it.”

Reviews
by Adrienne Turner at Legacy Support Ltd (Data Migration Services)
legacy-support.co.uk
We discovered Evolution after visiting a web-site designed by the company. We were impressed with the work and chose Neale and Jim to re-design our own website which needed updating. We also used them for our company rebranding. They redesigned our company logo and printed materials. We were very pleased with the end result.
Both Neale and Jim have a professional approach to their work and have been very helpful we would recommend them.
I have now worked with Evolution for the last 4 years and must admit their innovative ideas, communication and speed of response (when required) has been second to none.
Both Neale and Jim have put full effort into any project we have worked on together and with their lateral thinking strategy I am now delighted to have a secure brand with a full range of literature to complement which I am confident will bring results as required.
A hard working duo who will always make time for you, listen to your requirements and then just seem to bring that extra impressive idea to the table when required.
I started up my company a number of years ago and found Evolution through an event where Neale was speaking. I was impressed with what he had to say and approached him to help me set up my website. He and Jim have been so professional in their approach to what I wanted to achieve. With their skill and ability Evolution have understood my line of business from the inside out and been creative and thorough. They have remained supportive and helpful on every occasion that I have needed their help and assistance. I definitely recommend their work and company as a whole.
Having no experience with websites other than what i liked when i browsed the net, i really needed taken by the hand when i came time to have one of our own. Neale and Jim at Evolution took me through the process one step at a time and actually made the whole experience very pleasant. Both are undoubtedly very experienced individuals in their field but what impressed me most was the genuine interest they showed in my business. A joy to work with. Thanks guys.
I found Evolution Design very easy to work with. They had good design skills and were technically competent, a combination that in my experience is more unusual than it should be among web design companies. I had quite specific requirements, including the sourcing of suitable photos, and Evolution were able to produce an attractive solution that met all my requirements at a competitive price.
In my dealings with Evolution Design, I was looked after by Neale and Jim, two lovely people, who are courteous, yet professional and efficient both, in communication and quality of service as well asend product.
They took all my requests into consideration. Jim re-did the design until I was completely satisfied, consulting me at every stage of the process, after explaining all the steps in jargon free, simple English. Nothing was too much trouble at all.
I was extremely pleased with the outcome. Although the current recession is not conducive to a having a profitable business, I am loathe to shut down the business, mainly because of the fantastic website!
Neale, at Evolution Design, even helped me with setting up on Facebook and Twitter, giving me a lot of advice on how to increase on-line traffic in various ways. He helped wth marketing in other ways too, even suggesting the name of a potential customer. This lead turned out to be very fruitful!
Neale and Jim are extremely kind-hearted souls - something very rare in today's greedy, business world.
I strongly recommend dealing with Evolution Design if you are looking for a Website Design company that takes pride in its quality of service and end-product and go the extra mile to help you to succeed.
We have used Evolution for a number of projects, both web and printed material. Their work has always been first class as they listen to the client's brief and make things better than we imagined!
They always keep us fully informed during the development process of projects and they resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
Jim Callaghan
Creative Director
Before founding Evolution in 1993 Jim communicates through design. He gained a BA in Design at Edinburgh College of Art. He has designed identities, websites and literature for many of our largest clients where his patient meticulous approach is highly prized as his creative work is our product. Jim would oversee this project from concept through to artwork and print proofing. He designs on PC and tests on Apple Mac.
WWDC:
What's your name and position in the company?
Evolution Design:
”Neale Gilhooley, MD overseeing Client Services”
WWDC:
Describe your company in 5 words.
Evolution Design:
”Proud, not precious of work”
WWDC:
What's your business philosophy?
Evolution Design:
”Our ethos is to be proud of our work without being precious about it.
We endeavour to assist clients to communicate with their various audiences in a user friendly way. We aim to present information in a format that is easy to digest or to navigate.
We also appreciate that design is an investment and as such it is a cost to business and has to be completed to a budget in a professional manner. We deliver on budget and on time without any hidden costs.
If something does go wrong it how you react to fix it that matters.”
WWDC:
Describe your office environment.
Evolution Design:
”Professional and business like. We share offices with a PR firm and that helps us cross fertilise ideas and not get locked into typical web designers mentality. Which tends to be more about delivering data than telling a brand story. ”
WWDC:
Describe how your team interact and work together.
Evolution Design:
”A marketing person talks to the Client first to establish the brief and all that is expected of that website or pieces of design. The Designer meets the Client as part of the creative briefing and again at presentations as the Designer must take the feedback and make sense and use of it.
We have internal reviews and then actively seek Clients input at every stage.
The rest can vary to meet the Clients needs. We have even put a Designer into a Clients office for 6 weeks to be closer and more immediate.”
WWDC:
What makes you different from other web design companies?
Evolution Design:
”Having the twin strengths of being able to design for any medium and understanding which propositions will work with the target audiences all helps to create design that delivers a message rather than getting in the way of it.”
WWDC:
How do you get the majority of your business?
Evolution Design:
”We get a lot of repeat business as we have been around for 17 years. This helps with generating referrals too. Most new business enquiries come via our website, plus we attend lots of networking events and get out of our comfort zone.”
WWDC:
Describe how you manage projects from the initial client contact to completion and handover.
Evolution Design:
”The same person finds the Client, helps them develop the brief, and project manages from start to finish. He acts on behalf of the Client in an objective way.
The Client also needs to spend time with the Designer who seeks constructive client input at every stage. This level of direct involvement will also help to tease out any issues and sensitivities not previously identified as well as ensuring that our Clients take ownership of the newly developed work at the earliest stage possible.
Then we teach them how to maintain their own website on their won PC making the training 100% relevant.”
WWDC:
What do you think is the most crucial element of creating a good client relationship?
Evolution Design:
”Integrity is paramount, always propose the right solution even if that makes you less money it makes for a happy satisfied loyal Client. Also become an extension of your Clients business or Marketing department and not just for the period of the project, after care is vital and that includes thinking about your Clients business often more than your own.
Keep communicating, keep them abreast of developments, suggestions deadlines and costs throughout the entire process.
It helps if you have worked on the Client side and fully understand the pressure that they are under.”
WWDC:
How do you manage demanding clients?
Evolution Design:
”Managing expectations helps, always under promise that way you can over deliver. The other way round is fatal.
Understanding the demands are part of the job. Demanding Clients are fine as long as they demand for the right reasons and are challenging not just confrontational. At the end of the day the Client knows his market far better than we ever do and it is the Clients target audience that we are designing for.”
WWDC:
If a client was trying to decide between a shortlist of web design companies, how would you recommend they go about selecting the right one for them?
Evolution Design:
”1. Finding them on Google is not the end of your due diligence it is the start, go to Companies House, check if they really are members of the association they claim to be, get references and verify them.
2. Critique the web designers own website – do they understand how to communicate with their own target audiences?
3. Meet them and invest time discussing your needs. Be prepared for lots of questions and be honest with the answers
4. Prepare a full brief, the better the brief the better the response and the easier to evaluate
5. Remember that an agency is like an iceberg, a lot of what you need is actually under the water. ”
WWDC:
Where do you see your company in 10 years time?
Evolution Design:
”We believe in evolution and will practice what we preach. That’s why we chose the name Evolution. ”
WWDC:
Where do you see the web design industry in the future?
Evolution Design:
”Increasingly fragmented with best of breeds emerging in each area.
But many agencies will fail as increased competition from out with the UK means falling prices which will not be sustainable for many web design companies.
The ones that form the best relationships by understanding their Clients needs will do best. ”
WWDC:
What computers do you have use in your offices, PCs or Macs?
Evolution Design:
”Both PC and Mac”
WWDC:
If you were to give your clients one tip on how to get the most from their website what would it be?
Evolution Design:
”A properly briefed, motivated and remunerated agency will give you back far more than you put in and will be sustainable and around in the future when you need more service and support.”
