The Family History Partnership
www.thefamilyhistorypartnership.com
The Family History Partnership is an organisation providing books, guides and handbooks for local and family historians. Their previous website was self-built, and had become large and difficult to manage. In addition, the Partnership wanted to add an online payment facility. We redesigned the website to show clear listings of all the publications available, alongside a 'shopping basket' and online checkout. We took over an existing Ford workshop in Witney but needed to let all possible customers know the new name and the new site. I was recommended to Emma at Clarified Web Design by our printers and met Emma just a couple of months ago. She took a detailed brief and within days had drafted a great basic website for us. We only needed a couple of meetings plus a good few emails to finalise the site layout and I am delighted with the result. Emma also organised our emails and the hosting.
As a complete technophobe I needed someone to do all the above for me and she did it well and very economically.
I am pleased to recommend Dlarified Web Design.

Clarified Web Design are a professional company with a human approach to their work. From an initial meeting to discuss the general look of web site and what it was aimed to achieve, Emma went away and provided a general, but detailed, specification for each of the pages in a very prompt manner.
I then provided just text and a selection of images to go on the site and Emma put this together, along with the company logo and colours, which Emma organised by contacting my designer directly. In just over a week Emma came back with the design to check before it went live. No design changes were required as she had obviously listened to everything I had said, as well as conducting some research into the ecological field and adding a few details herself. The site exceeded our expectations and Emma was very prompt and understanding with the minor changes to our own text.
Emma also offered expert advise on how to maximise hits from search engines and offers on-going advise and page updates very promptly, as well as talking me through the initial e-mail set-up. Clarified Web Design is the current host of the site and I am pleased for this to be the case. It was all a simple and pain free exercise with outstanding results that are now helping to promoote my business in a professional and dynamic way.

Emma Peat
Owner/Manager
I set up Clarified Web Design in 2006 having worked extensively as a developer for Web Agencies in London and Oxford.
I now handle everything from design to development to client contact, and love the variety that brings.
I passionately believe in creating wesites which look good and are easy to use - that fulfil a purpose and are not just stuffed with flashing lights, bells and whistles. I also enjoy working with 'novices' and helping them to understand the process and produce a website they can be proud of.
Q: What's your name and position in the company?
A: Emma - web designer, developer, account manager, copywriter, SEO specialist and more!
Q: Describe your company in 5 words.
A: friendly, reliable, honest, pro-active, human!
Q: What's your business philosophy?
A: I want my clients' websites to be the best they can be, tailored to the needs to their business and their budget. If my clients are successful, then I will be too. This is achieved through a close working partnership - the most satisfying projects combine the client's drive and love of their business with my technical skills and knowledge.
Q: Describe your office environment.
A: I work from a home office so it's pretty quiet, but that allows me to focus. All I need is my PC.
Q: Describe how your team interact and work together.
A: I'm primarily a sole trader and handle the whole web development process from start to finish. However, I can also call on a local network of trusted partners when necessary to deliver various add-on services to my clients, such as graphic/print design or IT support.
Q: What makes you different from other web design companies?
A: Being a sole trader and handling the whole process myself, there is no breakdown of communication e.g. from account manager to designer, or from designer to technical developer. I have a complete overview of every project, which I believe contributes to the quality of the finished product. I have a strong personal bond with my clients, who feel they can trust me for advice and know I will respond quickly and professionally to their requests.
Q: How do you get the majority of your business?
A: Some through Google searches, but primarily through referral and networking.
Q: Describe how you manage projects from the initial client contact to completion and handover.
A: I meet with the client (assuming they are local) for a free consultation, during which I will learn about their business, their customers, and their aims for their website. This forms the basis of the project quote and specification, which the client can adjust if they wish. I then build a draft website to meet the agreed spec, release it for testing and feedback, making changes as necessary until the client is happy to launch it Live. I continue to provide support and advice afterwards.
Q: What do you think is the most crucial element of creating a good client relationship?
A: Trust, and hard work on both sides. The most successful projects are a partnership - if the client is willing to put in the effort too the results are far better.
Q: How do you manage demanding clients?
A: It depends on the demands! I prioritise clients who put the most effort and drive into their own websites, and respond in kind.
Q: If a client was trying to decide between a shortlist of web design companies, how would you recommend they go about selecting the right one for them?
A: Look at portfolios of designs. If you like their general style, you'll probably like what they do for you - and vice versa (don't hire someone if you don't like their work, it has happened and it doesn't go well!). Check reviews from past customers to get a feel for how the designer/company works. Meet with them and ensure you feel a 'bond' and that you can trust them. If you have doubts, they are probably not right for you. A good match will lead to a good website and satisfaction all round.
Q: Where do you see your company in 10 years time?
A: I'm currently focusing on building a strong core base of local customers who need regular updates.
Q: Where do you see the web design industry in the future?
A: It is moving so fast it's hard to say. There are so many features around now which were unheard of even a couple of years ago. Social media is obviously having a big impact. I hope there's still a place for good quality basics, some things seem too complicated for their own good.
Q: What computers do you have use in your offices, PCs or Macs?
A: PC
Q: How was your company name chosen?
A: After many weeks of deliberation and looking up words in the dictionary to reflect my ethos of working.
Q: If you were to give your clients one tip on how to get the most from their website what would it be?
A: Keep investing in it (time and money) - you can't just build it and leave it there, it needs ongoing love and attention to keep up with the competition and you have to be committed to it.
