Ask a Website Design Company
Question
web design hourly charge
I have asked for quotes for a site that includes ecommerce, blogs, video, and customer profile pages, with a cms that I can update. I am familiar with word press so something built around wp would suite. I have been quoted £75, totalling at £2500, can anyone comment or compete with that price.

I am experience with WordPress and all of my latest clients have requested WordPress sites. If you have a budget in mind or a specific price you'd like me to try and compete with, I'd be more than happy to. If I can't I'd be more than happy to help you analyze your current quotes if nothing else.
Feel free to contact me for more questions, a free quote, or for comments on your current quotes!

Hi Lydia,
For the functionality you're talking about, that quote does seem somewhat excessive unless it has some services wrapped around it (SEO, content management, etc.)
I'd be very happy to offer a competitive quote if you can provide some more detail.

Colman

Hello Lydia,
Understanding your requirement, I would suggest not to go for an hourly job and take a price based on the complete project scope. You may view our website www.redchillimedia.com and www.redchillimedia.co.uk and our portfolio www.redchillimedia.com/portfolio to get a glimpse of our work.
If you could suggest a convenient time to discuss about the project through any mode of communication of your preference we could discuss on the project and give our suggestions.
With best regards,

Hi Lydia
Contrary to what another company has answered, I think, given the amount of functionality you require a quote of £75 per hour is reasonable. £75 per hour is also a fairly standard hourly rate.
I am not touting for your business here as we do not build so much these days rather we concentrate on SEO and marketing, however, it is the old saying 'you pay peanuts you get monkeys'.
If you are at all concerned that you feel you may be being 'ripped off' contact other customers within the companies portfolio and get recommendations. Make sure you have a proper document detailing all the work that will be carried out, talk it through over and over so that you are entirely happy that they 'get' what it is you are trying to achieve, then personally I would go with the company.
I hope that helps.

Hi Lydia,
I think for the package you are looking for £2,500 actually seems like a good deal, I think for 33.33 hrs of work @ £75 isn't really the case though as I would estimate that a project of this magnitude would take more than 4 days to complete - at least to the standard you are looking for.
Kind Regards

Hi Lydia
If you'd like to pass over the full details we'd happily give you a fixed price quote, other than that we charge an hourly rate of £50.
Any questions just let us know
Many thanks

Hi Lydia
We charge £28 per hour for WordPress work as it is quite a simple system to setting up - WordPress essentially have done all the work already!
As you are aware WP is a fantastic and simple way to update with blogs and videos - we can easily bolt-on an eCommerce solution within this that would work for selling your products and services.
Feel free to get in touch. It would be great to get a fuller spec from you so that we can suggest a package that would work best for you.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
What is your timeline on this?
Best wishes

Lydia,
To answer you question about the quote - it's about the standard rate at the moment. Can we compete with it? Yes, can we ensure you still get the high standard of service you expect? Yes! How is it possible? we teemed up with our host to offer our customers better deal in exchange for going green - if our customers agree to host their website on eco servers the the host pays substantial part of your design costs - and don't worry, hosting on eco servers is very competitive and most of all - you don't need to take our offer, it's your choice.
Thank you

I've worked with PageLines for the past year. PageLines is one of the big leaders in "professional wordpress themes" - search Google to learn more.
I have extremely intimate knowledge of WordPress as for the past year I worked endless hours with customers troubleshooting their WordPress, plugin and theme issues as well as doing advanced custom CSS/Graphic work for those customers that hired me.
As for price, somewhere in between those two prices is what I would be thinking personally. You definitely want to stay away from £75 - that's just plain shady and £2500 might be fair for the amount of work someone without a full understanding of the ease of use WordPress provides.
If you're looking for a proper quote you're welcome to contact me.
Thanks, Bryan

Hi Lydia,
The Wordpress platform can certainly be used to meet your requirements and the quote you have been given may be a little on the high side. With out your full design specification it's difficult to say how much work would be involved, but for Wordpress development, I think £75 / hour is a little on the steep side unless you are having bespoke plugins / template built for you and Search Engine Optimisation.
We carry out a lot of work for our clients with Wordpress websites so please feel free to review our portfolio for examples of our work.
If you would like us to provide you with a no obligation quote, please get in touch and we will be only to happy to assist in any way we can.
Kind regards,

Hi Lydia
For an eCommerce project we would never quote on an hourly rate.
Taking all your web project requirements into consideration we would give a quote for the overall project.
Any additional work carried out after the project completion or feature-creep (out of scope) would likyle be charged at an hourly rate.
A rough figure of between £1000 to £2000 would be consistent with your ecommerce requirements but would really depend on knowing more about the scope of your project.
Give us a call to chat and discuss your web project and we would be in a better place to give you a realistic quote for the work.
Regards,
Wil.

We can provide you with a fixed fee, for a project I'd say it is much more reasonable then an hourly rate.

Hi Lydia,
I would recommend joomla rather than wordpress.
Its is incredibly easy to use and maintain.
We could provide a system like you are asking for for around £500.

Have you looked at Actinic? As an ecommerce platform it is superb, if you have some experience of webdesign/CMS it may work out much cheaper for you. A business licence and a years software support which is focused on helping you achieve your online objectives is far less than your 2500 quote allowing you to buy in some design time if needed.
You'll find them at www.actinic.com
