Hi Duncan,

While SEO is a big concern, one of the first things to consider actually is the architecture of your site; proper link titles, and alt tags for images among them.

As for finding a reputable SEO company, you want to stay away from any companies that will promise you top rankings. A reputable SEO company will review your site architecture and will concern themselves mainly with good solid, relevant content. Many reputable companies will offer content review and / or writing as one of their main services.

Another thing to look for in an honest SEO company is their willingness to offer you FREE advice... not that they will do things for your for free, but they may offer suggestions of how to approach your SEO marketing scheme; of course this is how they would sell themselves, but it's good in the sense that they will describe in detail what they will do for you.

If an SEO company simply promise rankings and mention submissions to multiple search engines as their primary goal, I would recommend avoiding them.

Hope that helps.

There isn't one definitive place to get your answer. However, Google is your friend and there are plenty of articles and tip if you do a quick search.

For example
http://www.highrankings.com/tentips or our own blog at http://www.omniserve.ie/blog/index.php/omniserve/tag/free-seo-tips/

Either way the price can vary greatly. Any company should be able to show you examples. It really depends on what you want to achieve and where.

The best place to get definitive SEO information is from Google as they have the largest market share.

Hi, instead of trying to promote our business, i will give you a definitive aswer. If you want to to do the SEO on your website yourself, and you want to get on the first page of Google, the best website to visit is Google website and set up a Google Webmaster account and follow the guidelines. Ignore all the other answers. SEO is not guaranteed, but as long as you follow the guidlines set out by Google you will see the results show.

I look at SEO like this:

1) Make sure the site is accessible to search engines: valid HTML, alternatives to javascript where necessary.
2) Make the site is useful and relevant to humans, and easy for them to navigate.

Assuming "Search Engine" = "Google":

Google's income comes from advertising. They only make advertising money if people use them as their usual search engine. People will only use them as their usual search engine if they return useful results. Therefore, Google's business strategy requires them to return sites that are useful to humans as much as possible, and so a very large part of Search Engine Optimisation is actually Human Visitor Optimisation.

The best place to start is Google's web masters guidelines as the problem with SEO is there is a lot of conflicting information. So consulting the engines themselves is a good place to start other good places are SEOmoz, and Sphinn. Or why not set-up a Google alert for SEO or search engine optimisation and this way you will get all the up to date information in your inbox. I hope this helps

One of the best resource I have found for SEO over the years is SEOmoz.org...

They have created a full list of all the SEO ranking factors and have listed them in the order of importance - http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors#ranking-factors

I hope this helps,
