The good news is that what you have described can be easily and readily built in such a way that you will be able to manage the site into the future. From what I understand you need a gallery to display your work and then when a visitor wants to buy one of your pictures they will be offered the various delivery mechanisms (download, print, size etc) and a way to pay you. Download would then happen as soon as payment is made; an order created for you to fulfill if a print or other product is required. All the expected customer/administration paperwork will be automatically created by the site.

As to costs - when inquiring of companies make sure that all the potential costs are covered. Design and Build (against an agreed and detailed specification), hosting, maintenance and any annual license fees that will accrue for the software used.

If we were to quote you on this job I would structure the costs as follows:

Overall design and set-up - We charge a set-up and design fee of £250, which covers the design of the site and establishment of the core software; £40 per page for the contact Us and Home page. For the galleries we would need to understand more of what you have in mind but once the format is determined the addition of more material is very straightforward - you may elect to do this yourself - we'll happily show you how.

E-commerce component - this component will control how your customers place their orders and pay you the money. There is a one-off acquisition, install and configuration fee of £495, which will include integration to your chosen payment provider.

Hosting - we charge an annual fee for hosting your site - this starts at £96 per year for 500Mb

Maintenance - we offer a range maintenance packages to suit your particular requirements - these start at £75 per quarter. All of our maintenance packages give you 24/7 access to our extensive 'help' tutorial and videos.

License Fees - in this case there would be no ongoing license fees payable.

That would give you a design and build cost in the region of ~£900 and an ongoing commitment for hosting and maintenance of ~ £400. All plus VAT.

There are many options you have for running a good photographic website, depending on your budget and requirements.

If your budget is low then there are many good photography websites that allow you to set up and sell your own photographs without any technical knowledge at all. Many of these account based systems can be found throughout photography magazines such as Advanced Photoshop or Digital Photographer, amongst others, they do all the commerce parts and run the galleries for you and usually supply very easy to use dashboard system for uploading and managing your photos. Be careful to check the fees though as some charge a lot more than others.

If you definitely want your own website then a simple e-commerce system using a PayPal payment gateway then Dr Adept could set you up from as little as £495, with domain name and hosting included and an easy to use content manager system for you to manage the galleries yourself.

You could start with a simple design with a small gallery of images and then work your way up form there, or go all out and publish as much as possible in the initial design phase.

Hi Anya,

Well I always advise leaving it to a pro if you are wanting to sell anything online. However there is a lot to be said about having great photos on your website, it can really make or break it. So being a photographer, you have that box ticked.

Wordpress would probably be the easiest for you to use and there are plugins you can use to make it work as a basic e-commerce website.

You will be able to easily update it and add more content, but also use it with flickr accounts too.

It really all depends on whether you are wanting a polished professional look right from the start (that should not effect the cost if you choose a web designer that does design professional websites - if you are going to pay for web design do not cut costs by finding the cheapest out there, because you can find you would probably have been better off doing it yourself).
