Question

Opening an e-commerce website.
I'm opening an e-commerce website in 2012 and I am looking for a web designer. I don't have much knowledge in web design and I'm looking for some advice, firstly on costing. I'm looking for a complicated design on a big scale (along the lines of asos.com). How much should I be looking at paying? Also, I'm wondering whether I would have to employ a web designer to join the team, or whether I can employ a web design company and upload the new products to the website myself?

Hey there Sophie

The price will vary greatly depending on the scale of what you're looking to do and the features of the service on offer. My advice would be to shop around then compare prices and, perhaps most importantly, compare their work. See how easy their e-commerce systems are to use.
A web designer / developer may work out cheaper in the long run for a big enterprise, but most systems can be developed in just a few weeks, then handed over for the client to look after.

I hope this helps Sophie

Best regards

Toby

The costing will totally depend on your brief, for example do you need integration with stock management systems etc.

I think you will definitely benefit from using a agency rather than employing a individual. When you are using a agency you will not only receive skills and knowledge from a individual but the whole team.

Have a shop around and see what the different agencies offer, also try and have a think about the platform for the website. I would recommend using a opensource ecommerce such as Magento, the main reason for this is that you will not be tied down to one particular agency.

Hope this helps

Good that you have started planning already. I would suggest that you will need a team to be able to build something on the lines on asos and then maintain this for you. Though adding products is a relatively easy option and this can be done by your side also but to keep on adding new features to the website, you will get better support from a business rather than a freelance designer. This would require skills in Photoshop, Flash, XHTML/CSS, Flash, PHP/MySQL and Search Engine Optimization and its really difficult to find one person who can wear all these hats and do the job well.

Well Sophie, for a huge website like that, you'd be looking at a 4 figure sum (I'd imagine) - but a good designer is well worth that.

You'd want an easy-to-use ecommenrce platform though, so you can add products yourself over time (it's easy to do, and the costs for having to keep a developer on-hand to add products for you can add up).

You'll also want to consider how you're going to promote your website too. We're Google-qualified search consultants, so we'll be more than happy to help you with both search engine optimisation and a Google AdWords campaign.

If you want to discuss it with our web design team, drop us an email to enquiries@firstfound.co.uk

Hi Sophie,

this sounds right up our street. We've been developing ecom websites for a number of years with a massive collection of shop sites in our portfolio. It would certainly be a much cheaper option than employing an in house designer, and the system we use is simple, yet very powerful.

If you'd like to talk about a quote, or just have a general chat with one of our salesman, get in contact with me at james.scott@creare.co.uk - I'll have a chin wag with you, and also get a salesman involved to give you some great advice.

Look forward to hearing from you,

James Scott,
Creare Design.

Hi Sophie,

The scale of the website is something separate to the number of products you hope to sell. If you intend 'big scale' to mean a large selection of products similarly to asos, then you could expect to pay considerably less than if you mean 'big scale' to mean a website with a large number of features.

With any e-commerce website you would be looking at maintenance going forward, and would want to have a system that allowed you to easily manage your products and provided enough features to handle the options you would want to associate with these products (e.g. gift wrapping, size/colour, stock levels, back-ordering etc.).

The more features you required, the more you can expect to pay. Another thing to consider is whether a 'one size fits all' type shop would suit your purposes. There are plenty of e-commerce solutions that exist which you simply apply your brand to, although these tend to be better aimed at companies wanting a simpler shopping solution. Many web design companies will develop a shop based on an existing shopping system that they just apply a skin to. If you wanted a truly bespoke system which catered to your exact needs you would probably be looking at more considerable cost, probably starting at £15,000, but easily rising much higher the more complex your requirement. Comparatively, a company offering to skin an existing shopping solution could probably be found to work for sub-£5,000. The advantage to the more expensive option is the ability to get exactly what you need from your shopping solution, both in the front-end presented to customers and in the control you have over your website and the products sold.

Having a web designer on your team would be advantageous to you if you planned to make constant alterations to the sites design, but this could be costly, particularly if you were having someone on staff whose talents you only needed occasionally. It would probably be more cost effective for you to employ someone who would have the technical expertise required (and the level of expertise shouldn't be very high if you're using a good system) to update products within your shop, and maintain your stock levels, prices etc. and use a web design company to make any site alterations that you may decide to make in the future.

Hopefully this gives you some useful information.

Matt

Hi Sophie,

Thankfully gone our the days when web designers had to use serious ASP web developers to build online shops, which is good for you as this keeps costs down. I would use a Content Management and eCommerce platform called Lemonstand (http://lemonstandapp.com/) for a project of your size. With this you can easily look as good as any shop in the world with the right web design agency behind you like say Creativesheep Ltd :)

To give you a rough idea of prices I would say your looking at between £2500-£5000 but this would allow you to manage the whole shop yourself without the need of constantly going back to a web designer for updates. The only time when you might want to get a web designer involved again would be to do any offer work, online banners etc (important to keep brand integrity high)

Hope this helps.

Regards

Chris

Hi Sophie,

For a project of this size you are looking at quite a cost due to the number of hours for development and testing.

I would recommend finding a developer that can handle your needs in whichever language or platform you require, also make sure the code is bespoke and not part of any open source or proprietary system as if you wish to take the code elsewhere and run it on an alternate server later on their may be extra costs involved.

If you do not have the large budget then go for an open source e-commerce system that has been tried and tested to destruction, check out some of the e-commerce sites created on those systems and see if any fit your system as closely as possible before undertaking the development phase.

My estimate for a project of this kind where you own the code and the complete rights to anything developed for you would be around £20,000.

If Dr Adept can help in any way please check out our profile and website at DrAdept.com, we have undertaken many forms of e-commerce projects including bespoke services.

Good luck with the project, it sounds interesting.

Hi Sophie,

ASOS is a fantastic website with lots of complicated design elements but this is what we have been doing for hundreds of our clients for along time. I would need to have a chat with you to discuss the requirements but as others have said it will be a 4 figure sum.

Heres a link to some of our case studies - http://www.evolution-websites.co.uk/brochure.html

Employing your own web designer would be more costly.

Our systems are created to allow you to upload your own products and information etc fast and require no previous technical knowledge.

Have a look at www.evolution-websites.co.uk for more info or give me a call for a no obligation chat.
