Ask a Website Design Company
Question
Need to redo and start again
I have been looking for someone who is affordable to redo one of my current websites and make about 8 new ones. The current site I have is soooooo outdated and inflexible. Everytime I wanted something done the comany would try to charge me an arm and a leg. I want control of my new website and my future websites,. I don't want to feel ripped off everytime I want to change something.
I want the current site to be quickly 1/ redesigned. 2/ updated 3/ Include freght calculator and working shopping cart 4/ embrace all the new things like social media, You tube, email blasting, membership, and lots more .... 5/ SEO and Links to get us to the top.
I have been scanning and scouring Freelance and O'Desk for several months but cannot find someone I feel comfortable committing with. When I check their references no one knows them.
I can't afford to pay zillions of unlimited dollars and need the shell of the website made so I can input the content.
I have looked at Joomla, Wordpress, X Cart and more. Just don't know what to do and need to make a decsion and move on the project FAST !!
What can I do?

Hello Janelle,
First off, you do need to feel comfortable with the people who are going to be working with,m if not it can cause a nightmare during the process. If you take the time to call the references of the designer/developers, you should get a very good indication of how things will work for you.
We highly recommend, and specialize in custom CMS websites, this gives you the ability and control to add/modify/edit your sites content as needed without having to pay additional monies out. I would also suggest that in the future you not mention additional projects or your need to move fast, until you have established a connection with a designer/developer, as this can actually work to attract scammers as fast as blood attracts sharks. It also serves as somewhat of a redflag to may serious designer/developers as it often turns into a situation of give me a cheap price as I am claiming I am going to send you more work later. This does not often sit well with companies, as it often times does not pan out to be true. It would better sere you to ask for a timeline of completion ( or their best guesstimate) without all project details, and when they could start.
If you would care to contact us, we would be glad to go over your project in further details.
Thank you.

Hi Janelle,
Unless you are prepared to learn to set up a lot of the software yourself you should be prepared to spend money on this project or you'll get either ripped off or an inferior, cheap and nasty site. There are no shortcuts.
If you have trouble committing to a new designer this probably isn't the place to look for one - I would suggest you deal with a local company you can go and speak to rather than look for a long distance relationship with a design company you would only have contact with by phone or email. They can often go missing or stop answering calls.
Set your project budget, priorities and specifications but make sure you are being realistic.
Unfortunately it is quite common for customers to approach web design companies asking for the moon on a stick and wanting it now but not wanting to pay for it.
You want a lot for your money - top seo, eight sites, social media and a whole load of other things, but then say you want the shell of a website - these things don't seem to add up. You also want them quickly - well a decent company may not be able to start work immediately - if they are good they are likely to be busy, after all.
A decent web design company will be able to guide you towards what will work best for you and explain what you are paying for, but I think you need to deal with people face to face. And you need to accept that what you want will cost money and you may have to lower your expectations if your budget is limited.
I see your current design company is still in business. Why can't you go back to them?

Hi Janelle,
I can't put it any better than Moghill already has - he's absolutely right on all counts.
Good luck with the project, but I would avoid elance/oDesk, especially for a project that is likely to require future amendments.
Good luck.

Unfortunately as you can't do it yourself, you need to pay someone to do it for you. Developers have sometimes spent years learning their trade and they won't simply give away the information they have invested time and money in over those years for little payment.
You really have three options;
1. Pay good money to someone good who you can trust. Someone with a good reputation with good quality clients who wont want to ruin their reputation, someone with a physical address.
2. Find someone local to you, so you can meet face to face, perhaps a university student or graduate whose rates will be less than a digital agency.
3. Learn to do it yourself!
Good luck and remember you get what you pay for!

It seems that you need a company that can provide you with a well-designed and modern website built cleverly with a CMS such as Wordpress or Joomla.
Many companies say they can provide a CMS fully integrated with a site but only allow you to change the innermost part of each page.
What if you wanted to change the text on the footer, or the stuff on the sidebar? Or possibly the main colours of the site?
All of this should be possible if your site is built in the correct way, and depending on your initial requirements most respectable design companies should be able to tell you 100% whether they can provide everything you need.
Being open about pricing is a must too - if there are future updates required which can't added or implemented yourself using the CMS then typically an hourly rate should be agreed beforehand.
Please give us a call on 0161 342 4561 if you have any questions.
Cheers,
Crhis.
