Hi Matt,

It's worth considering that many web design firms are teams of one or two people - often the smaller teams yield the better results but they are tightly scheduled.

Any designer worth their fee will not say, "Im too busy, go elsewhere" - this simply means they don't want to work for you. Consider relaxing your deadline to allow a designer to schedule you in at their next available point.

Sometimes web design can seem expensive to the general public, a good rule to go by is to see how much a local mechanic, builder or carpenter charge per hour (for labour charges) - this can be considered your areas 'professional rate'. If you are a medium to small business you are looking for them to hit this mark. Any less suggests they're struggling to find work and any more may mean they are aiming for larger clients.

I can understand where you are coming from, it happens in every industry - not only the design industry.

I can't tell you where to find a list of designers that are both highly talented and cheap at the same time, as sometimes it's a case of one or the other. If a rate is too good to be true, then it probably is for a reason. It also depends on what your definition of a "good rate" is? Not saying that it is, but perhaps your idea of a reasonable rate may be too low for the particular designers you are contacting - hence why they are informing you that they are too busy. It's often easier to say that we are too busy than to explain how much work is involved in a project and why we can't work for such a low price.

Just a thought anyhow :)

It's in every field so that providers either:

1) Are cheap and not good
2) Are very expensive and and deliver high quality
3) Are reasonably priced and very busy as they are probably just a freelancers who work on their own. Freelancers' minuses also include only one persons' experience, odd working hours, bad communication etc.
