You can make good money from a blog if you manage to get good traffic, but getting good traffic is the problem.
We have dealt with a couple of blogs and it does take quite a long time to start getting good quality traffic. You really need to try and build up a regular readership and generally participate in the blogging community.
It also helps if you pick a niche that is not saturated. One of the blogs we have helped focuses on Gadgets and Technology. It is starting to do ok now but not enough to justify it being a full time job. The problem is there are hundreds of other blogs in that niche, many of which have considerably large number of posts, very regular posting, and a well established readership.
The best approach to take is to treat it like a hobby initially, make sure you keep up with regular posting, comment on other blogs in your niche, and generally try and be a little special or different from competing blogs.
From our experience Adsense provides the least income for the Gadget blog we help, affiliates provide more income, with private adverts providing the most income.
The blog also received other benefits such as products to review.
Obviously depending on the blog and the niche difference advertising may perform better, it is something you need to experiment with.

Treat any income as a bonus!

As with the other advice, the topic of your blog with help to determine the amount of traffic that reaches your blog, and therefore can return potential advertising revenue, but with a (currently) unpopular topic, the amount you gain per click would be much lower.
Google AdSense, which is the perhaps most common and least obtrusive way of adding advertising to any page is based on Google AdWords, in that if your topic is highly competetive, with lots of people advertising for your site, the CPC (Cost Per-Click) bid would likely go up and therefore you would be able to earn more.
There is no way to say that you would be earning any particular amount. Any website has the potential to be earning thousands in advertising revenue, but equally could quite easily earn nothing. It's similar to these "Earn
